Beppu is a renowned hot spring resort town on the southern island of Kyushu, and it is famous for its numerous natural hot springs, geothermal activity, and unique hot spring features known as the “hells.” The Beppu Hells consist of several hot spring geysers, thermal ponds, and hot water springs, each with its distinct appearance and colour. These natural wonders are called “Hells” because the extremely high temperatures of the water make them too hot for bathing. As a result, they are mainly for viewing rather than recreational use. This afternoon you will take local buses to visit these hells such as Umi-Jigoku and Chinoike-Jigoku.

These mobile food stalls can be found lining the streets, particularly in areas like Nakasu and Tenjin, where locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy a variety of delicious dishes, with tonkotsu ramen being a standout favorite. Each yatai has its own charm and specialties, serving everything from skewered grilled meats (yakitori) to savory pancakes (okonomiyaki) and delectable seafood. The casual atmosphere encourages socializing, making it easy to strike up conversations with fellow diners and the friendly vendors.
